Your twins arrival day

Their birthday is finally here. Whether it’s a planned delivery or an unexpected arrival, the birth of your twins is a momentous day.

For many twin parents, the timing of delivery isn’t always in your control. Twins often arrive earlier than expected, and in my case, that was true. As a self-confessed planner, I was still caught off guard when I was unexpectedly admitted at 36 weeks.

Even though I had a Caesarean with my first baby, my experience with my twins was entirely different. Each birth story is unique, especially with multiples, and it’s important to prepare as best you can — but also stay flexible when things don't go according to plan.

One thing I wish I had known was how many small, unexpected decisions would come up. These little moments can feel incredibly overwhelming, so having a rough understanding of what might come up can make a big difference.

If you’re planning on giving birth in a hospital, here are a few things to consider:

  • Have your hospital bags packed early as pregnancy can become physically harder toward the end and your twins may arrive earlier than expected.

  • Arrange care for any other children ahead of time so you’re not scrambling if you need to go to the hospital unexpectedly.

  • Install car seats early and make sure they’re properly fitted.

  • Depending on how early your twins are born, hospitals may supply essentials like nappies, wipes, and clothing but it’s still good to bring the items you prefer.

  • Pack your postpartum essentials as this day is also about you and ensuring you have what you need and are comfortable.

  • Prepare mentally for unexpected questions and choices such as whether or not you want your babies to be fed formula or donor milk if your supply hasn’t come in yet.

Every twin birth journey is different — and while you can’t plan for every possibility, setting yourself up early can help you feel a little more grounded when the big day arrives.
